BILINGUAL AUTHORIZATION - SPANISH ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

  • Credential Program Application

Submit an online credential program application, along with a nonrefundable $100 application fee.

  • Valid Credential

Provide your valid California teaching or services credential document number. English learner authorization is required either as part of your valid credential or by CLAD Certificate.

  • Passing Score on CSET Spanish III (147) Exam

CSET Examination score used for certification purposes may not be older than 10 years from the individual exam date.

Teachers who hold a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Spanish in which they used the CSET examination are not required to take CSET subtest 147. We will only require a copy of your examination.

Teachers who hold a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Spanish in which they used a subject matter competency waiver or BA degree, will need to take the CSET subtest III for the added authorization. 

Teachers who hold a valid, non-emergency California Single Subject or Standard Secondary Teaching Credential with a major in a language other than English do not need to take Test II or III of the CSET: World Languages Exam to qualify for a bilingual authorization in that language. Teachers who hold a three-year or higher degree from a foreign institution in which all instruction is delivered in a language other than English also do not need to take Test II or III to qualify for a bilingual authorization in that language. The foreign institution must be equivalent in status to a regionally accredited institution of higher education in the United States.

Foreign transcripts:

Applicants with international transcripts must provide a copy of an official evaluation to the Teacher Preparation Office. An approved agency must conduct a detailed official evaluation of coursework; for a list of approved agencies, visit Foreign Transcript Evaluation (ca.gov).

CSET Spanish IV and V are not required and are not substitutable for course equivalencies at UC Merced. 

PLEASE NOTE: If you are currently admitted to the UC Merced Traditional Single Subject and Multiple Subject Program, you can apply for concurrent enrollment in the Bilingual Added Authorization Program. CSET LOTE III must be passed prior to the final semester of clinical practice (EDUCX 302/305). 

  • Language Proficiency

Documentation of the passage of CSET LOTE III (147) in Spanish is required for admission. (CSET Spanish IV and V are not required and are not substitutable for course equivalencies.)

 

 

Professional Licensure and Certification Disclosure

University of California programs for professions that require licensure or certification are intended to prepare the student for California licensure and certification requirements. Admission into programs for professions that require licensure and certification does not guarantee that students will obtain a license or certificate. Licensure and certification requirements are set by agencies that are not controlled by or affiliated with the University of California and licensure and certification requirements can change at any time.

The University of California has not determined whether its programs meet other states’ educational or professional requirements for licensure and certification. Students planning to pursue licensure or certification in other states are responsible for determining whether, if they complete a University of California program, they will meet their state’s requirements for licensure or certification. Accreditation

The Teacher Preparation Program is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

On August 6, 2021, The Commission on Teacher Credentialing granted full institutional approval to the University of California, Merced.
